                           YOU CAN TAKE A MAN OUT OF NY.  YOU CAN PUT HIM IN A BUCKNELL SWEATSHIRT.  BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE HIM ROOT FOR THE PHILLIES.  CHEF BOYLANO LOVES THEIR CHEESESTEAKS.  HE'S BEEN TO GENO'S AND PAT'S.  THE CHEF LOVES THOSE SALTED ICE CREAM CONES TOO.  RIGHT NOW HE'S HAVING A LITTLE PHILADELPHIA CREAM CHEESE ON HIS NY BAGEL.  AH PHILADELPHIA!  AS WC FIELDS PUT ON HIS TOMBSTONE:  AT LEAST I'M NOT IN PHILADELPHIA.

     I GO TO BOURNES POND AROUND THE CORNER FROM MY HOUSE IN FALMOUTH EVERY DAY. YESTERDAY I WALKED ON A PATH ALONG THE POND TO THE WEST OF FISHERMAN'S COVE PARK. I CAME UPON A PINK LADY SLIPPER ABOUT TO BLOOM. THEY ARE RARE BECAUSE THEY ARE WILD LILIES THAT CAN BE EASILY CRUSHED BY MOWERS,WALKERS OR MUNCHING RABBITS.  THEIR FLOWER LOOKS LIKE A LADY'S PINK SLIPPER. THERE ARE YELLOW ONES TOO.
     I VENTURED FURTHER ON THE PATH THROUGH THE WOODS AS IT SLOPED DOWN TOWARD THE POND HOPING TO SEE ANOTHER PINK LADY. SURE ENOUGH CINDERELLA HAD LOST A SLIPPER ON THAT PATH TOO. I WAS THRILLED. SO I FORGED ON  AGAIN ALONG THE POND PATH.
       MORE SURPRISES AWAITED ME IN THIS SUBURBAN CAPE COD NEIGHBORHOOD.
THE OSPREY HAD RETURNED AGAIN THIS YEAR TO THEIR PERCH (NEST ON A PLATFORM HIGH ABOVE THE POND). THE OSPREY WAS SQUAWKING ON THE NEST PERHAPS SIGNALING TO HER MATE THAT I WAS NEARBY. IT'S MID-MAY. I'M NOT SURE IF THERE ARE ANY BABIES YET. THANKS TO RACHEL CARSON AND HER BOOK FROM THE 1960'S THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THERE WILL BE MORE OSPREYS FOR YEARS TO COME.
         EVERY YEAR FALMOUTH READS THE SAME BOOK TOGETHER. LAST YEAR IT WAS MOBY DICK. THIS YEAR IT IS RACHEL CARSON'S THE SILENT SPRING. CARSON'S BOOK PUT A STOP TO DDT SPRAYING TO KILL MOSQUITOES ETC..   THE DDT GOT INTO THE OSPREY'S AND OTHER BIRDS EGG SHELLS . IT WEAKENED THE SHELL AND THE BIRDLINGS COULD NOT COME TO FULL TERM. THE EGGS WOULD NOT HATCH. THE OSPREY WOULD LAY EGGS AND NO OFFSPRING WOULD BE BORN. THEY WERE BECOMING RARE JUST LIKE THE PINK LADY SLIPPER.
     RACHEL CARSON'S SILENT SPRING AWAKENED THE PUBLIC TO THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF PESTICIDES.  DDT WAS BANNED. THE SPRING IS NO LONGER SILENT. THE OSPREYS ,EAGLES AND HAWKS ARE NOW FLOURISHING AND QUITE A COMMON SIGHT.
FALMOUTH IS READING THE SILENT SPRING THIS YEAR AS THE TOWN BOOK. THE TOWN IS CONTEMPLATING SEWERCIDE (INSTALLING SEWERS) TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION FROM SEPTIC TANKS, FERTILIZERS, ROAD SALT AND OIL FROM SEEPING INTO THE PONDS THAT FORK OUT TO VINEYARD SOUND AND BUZZARDS BAY FROM  FALMOUTH.  IN THE SUMMER.MANY OF THE PONDS (ESTUARIES) EMIT A VILE DECAYING ODOR. BUT THAT'S A TALE FOR ANOTHER DAY.
